The South Street Seaport Museum, located in the heart of the South Street Seaport Historic District in New York City, preserves and interprets the history of New York as a great port city. Founded in 1967, and designated by Congress as America's National Maritime Museum in 1998, the Museum houses an extensive collection of works of art and artifacts, a maritime reference library, exhibition galleries, and education spaces, working nineteenth-century print shops, and an active fleet of historic vessels to provide interactive exhibits and experiences to tell the story of "Where New York Begins."

The Seaport Museum is seeking a Volunteer Program Coordinator responsible for the recruitment, stewardship, and management of volunteer programs, activities, and labor. Reporting to the Vice President for External Affairs, the Volunteer Program Coordinator will strengthen and expand the Seaport Museum's volunteer recruitment processes, training programs, and offerings to maximize public engagement through volunteer activation.

The Volunteer Program Coordinator will:
Serve as the primary point of contact for volunteers and interns
Manage and coordinate in-person, on-site, outdoor volunteer workdays (currently Tuesdays and Saturdays, rain or shine)
Develop and manage volunteer recruitment, training, operations, retention, and recognition plans
Create engaging content for weekly volunteer newsletter and social media posts
Plan and execute volunteer celebrations and social events
Ensure compliance with US Coast Guard mandatory drug-testing program for sailing volunteers, with training provided as needed
Actively recruit interns and volunteers of all skill levels through local, public events and volunteer resource hubs, as well as high schools, colleges, and universities
Interview and vet prospective interns and volunteers to place with appropriate departments and programs
Oversee volunteer projects for Corporate groups whose Sponsorship benefits include a volunteer opportunity, in coordination with the Development department
Serve as a liaison between volunteers and Museum staff"

Requirements:
Minimum of 2 years of relevant work experience managing large groups of volunteers and/or interns, or equivalent experience
Familiarity with traditional sailing craft and/or historic vessels preferred
Must be highly motivated and organized with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills and excellent organizational and scheduling skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities and projects at once, be detail-oriented, and work well under deadlines.
Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff members, external contacts, and volunteers at all levels.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and Google Workspace.
Experience working with volunteer software like PlanDay, Volgistics, and/or Raiser's Edge is a plus.
Must be able to lift 25lbs, go up and downstairs, stand for long periods of time, and walk around the Museum campus, in all weather.
Per NYC Executive Order 225, all Museum employees in New York City must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination or provide weekly COVID-19 test results.
